The Territory Remembers WWII – through our eyes is a series of panel conversations with guest speakers who will provide first-hand recollections of WWII in the Northern Territory.
The following guest speakers will exchange stories and reflect on the impact of WWII on their own lives, their families and community:
Mrs Wendy James nee Secrett
Wendy was born in 1935 and came to Darwin in 1937. She was evacuated with her mother and siblings to Perth WA via the Koolinda in late 1941. She returned to Alice Springs in 1944 and then travelled to Darwin with her father and sibling six weeks after the war ended.
The Hon Austin Asche AC QC
Austin was born in Melbourne in 1925. His father was the Crown Law Officer in the NT, and Austin attended Darwin Primary School before returning to Melbourne in 1938 to attend Melbourne Grammar School. He served in the RAAF from 1944-1946, mostly in the NT and north WA.
Mrs Jacqui O’Brien nee Seale
Jacqui was born in 1926 in Darwin. Her parents owned and operated the Parap Hotel. Jacqui left Darwin to attend boarding school in Sydney, and visited Darwin for School holidays. After her schooling she did 4 years training in nursing and returned to Darwin in 1950-1951 to live at the Sisters Quarters at Darwin Hospital.
